Our Approach to Data Use

We adhere to the principles of Māori Data Sovereignty when considering how to use data generated by and for the kaupapa (initiatives) led through Koha Tree. While the data we handle isn't solely Māori data, these principles serve as a robust framework to ensure data is used ethically and responsibly.

Principles of Māori Data Sovereignty

These Māori Data Sovereignty principles were developed and articulated by Te Mana Raraunga. The below is how we express them for all creators and users of data on Koha Tree.

Rangatiratanga | Authority

All services and kaitiaki (guardians) of the tamariki (children) or others who receive koha through Koha Tree have the autonomy to choose what information to provide to those who give koha. They also decide whether we can use their data in our aggregated analyses to understand site usage, such as the number of children receiving koha through kindergartens across Aotearoa. Koha Tree whānau will only access information about an account to assist that user with an issue related to their account. Users have the right to request any deletions or modifications to the information we collect about them during the account creation process.

Whakapapa | Relationships

The details collected by gifters are used solely to enhance the delivery of kaupapa and projects for our community.

Whanaungatanga | Obligations

Individuals or organisations leading the various kaupapa hosted on Koha Tree are responsible for ensuring that their services and recipients determine the data being shared. At times, we may use third-party applications, including Mailgun and others, to enable gifters to create positive outcomes in their community. This will only occur if building the capability in-house is not a net positive, when weighed against the resources it would take from Koha Tree and the various kaupapa leaders contributing directly to the community.

Kotahitanga | Collective Benefit

In line with our commitment to contributing to the technology workforce, especially for underrepresented Māori, we seize every opportunity to create learning and development opportunities through our interactions with data and the building/maintenance of this platform. To contribute to the mātauranga (knowledge) continuum, we proactively share our approach to bringing this platform and project to life.

Manaakitanga | Reciprocity

All data and information accessed or used by or on Koha Tree will only be used in ways that uplift the mana (dignity, prestige) of those whom the data or information is about.

Data Security

Koha Tree is committed to ensuring that the data placed in its care is secure and protected.
